Lift and Shift Migration of Hyperion Planning and Reporting

Scope of work

HTC embarked on a strategic project with the goal of migrating their existing Hyperion planning and reporting frameworks to the cloud, covering key performance management functions such as budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting. This initiative was designed to leverage Oracle’s cloud capabilities to enhance accessibility, scalability, and compliance adherence, while reducing the need for continuous infrastructure upgrades. The scope included a complete lift and shift migration, targeting the transition of all existing functionalities without redesigning or reengineering the original processes.

Challenges

Throughout the migration process, HTC encountered several significant challenges:

Provisioning Issues: Initially, Oracle provided limited environments, thus restricting HTC’s ability to test and deploy multiple instances concurrently. This issue demanded extensive coordination with Oracle’s sales and support teams to ensure the provisioning met project timelines.

Data Push Functionality: The anticipated functionality for pushing data between cubes using data maps was inhibited due to Oracle’s limitations on cross-pod data transactions. This required a shift to alternative, more complex solutions to meet the data integration needs effectively. The team used Data Integration (Data Management) to push data between applications using connected databases without a need to produce flat files. Until Oracle updates these cross-pod data capability maps, this approach works well and can be fully automated.

Despite these obstacles, strategic planning and effective stakeholder engagement facilitated prompt resolutions, helping to keep the project on track without impacting the critical path or the project timeline.

Success Delivered

The project was successfully completed on time and within the allocated budget, aligned entirely with HTC’s strategic objectives and without necessitating any change orders or delays. Key achievements include:

  • Cloud Transition: The seamless migration of budgeting, forecasting, and reporting elements to Oracle’s cloud environment, enhancing operational flexibility and scalability
  • Enhanced Compliance and Reduced Maintenance: Moving to the cloud significantly reduced the cycle of continuous upgrades required with on-premise solutions, addressing compliance with evolving infrastructure requirements and enhancing security protocols
  • Preparation for Future Capabilities: The successful migration has set the foundation for future enhancements including the potential addition of workforce and capital modules, and the account reconciliation module (ARCS), aligning with HTC’s long-term financial operations management strategy

The successful outcome of this project not only demonstrated Elire’s expertise in managing a complex lift and shift cloud migration, but also solidified HTC’s trust in Elire’s ability to deliver results that resonate with corporate objectives and technological advancements.
