Genuine Parts Company Genuine Parts Company (GPC) is a service organization engaged in the distribution of automotive replacement parts and industrial replacement parts and materials. The Company has a distribution network of over 3,600 operations located throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Singapore, France, the U.K., Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and China.
Scope of the Project GPC implemented PeopleSoft FSCM 9.1 in 2012. The initial implementation was rolled out for one business unit and a small subsidiary. GPC then continued deployment of PeopleSoft for other Business Units and subsidiaries, ending in 2016. They upgraded to PeopleTools 8.55 in October of 2018. GPC contacted Elire through an RFP. Elire was asked to present the RFP response to the GPC leadership team in March of 2019. During the Orals presentation, Elire presented our Success DeliveredTM Upgrade Methodology and our Elire PeopleSoft Accelerator Tools. GPC provided feedback that the Elire Methodology and Accelerator Tools stood out as true differentiators and separated Elire from the rest of the competition. GPC also spoke highly of the Elire Accelerator Toolset. The purpose of this PeopleSoft 9.2 upgrade project was to continue improving services and maintain GPC's investment in the PeopleSoft Financials suite. A core driver was to upgrade to PeopleSoft 9.2 to maintain Oracle support. During this phase of the project, there was a goal to minimize end user impact, however, Genuine Parts wanted to lay a strong foundation for leveraging new and improved functionality within the PeopleSoft application in the future. This upgrade also provided the Genuine Parts community with an opportunity to review business process decisions and reduce system modifications.
The Challenge GPC transaction details from all retail stores combined to make the PeopleSoft database over 7 terabits. A normal PeopleSoft database size is under 1 terabit in size. The large size of the database and large volume of transactions in key tables made the processing time of the upgrade far exceed the window of allowable downtime. The Elire Upgrader worked tirelessly with the GPC DBAs, system administrator, and Oracle to identify new and creative ways to reduce the upgrade processing time significantly. The GPC timeline called for an April Go-Live in 2020, a challenge due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a retail company, GPC, had to shut down all contract engagements and put the project on hold for 4 months. Elire was able to resume the project up in late July and quickly finalized cutover plans. Additional mock moves were added to ensure everyone was ready after the long delay.
Success Delivered While a goal was to minimize end user impact during this phase of the project, Elire was able to successfully deploy WorkCenter functionality to the Finance Group through the use of GL CM WorkCenters. GPC was also able to reduce customizations by 37% which lays a strong foundation for easier application of future PUM Images. Elire was able to meet the demanding 36-hour timeline for the cutover weekend. GPC completed two weeks of hyper-care and was able to exit hyper-care two weeks early due to the quality of work by both technical and functional resources.
